Lift Stations are tanks that collect sewage then a pump will pump the waste to the
sewer pipes. Lift Stations are usually used when the sewer line is not deep enough
for the drain of the building.
If you have ever seen a house that the land it is on is lower than all the surrounding
land, it is using a lift station to pump the sewage to the sewer which is above it,
yet buried. Generally are located in the city.
Lift stations can be from 40 gallons to 1000's of gallons.
Not to be confused with "outhouses" which are simply holes in the ground with some
sort of shelter above with a cut out for a commode. The waste simply fills the hole
and the building is then moved.
Vault Toilets are actual tanks in the ground and a structure is built over top. These
are the preferred rest facilities at a lot of campgrounds. The tanks are water tight,
with no drainage and must be pumped out.
